Benjamin Mullin of the website Poynter reports that journalist-turned educator Matt Waite won a $50,000 grant from the Knight Foundation to kickstart a fledgling drone program at The University of Nebraska-Lincoln. That was three years ago. He called his project the "Drone Journalism Lab" and within a few months built and flew several drones to survey the surrounding landscape from up above. One project offered a birds-eye view of a drought-stricken Nebraska landscape enduring one of its worst dry spells since the Dust Bowl.

Unfortunately shortly thereafter Matt got a cease-and-desist letter from the FAA demanding he ground his drones. Read the full story at the Poynter.
